MAUI, Hawaii
I re-discovered Maui! Having been to Hawaii before, I thought I had a fairly good grasp of the island of Maui, but after visiting again in March 2012, and having a bit more free time - I enjoyed a whole new aspect of the island that moved it to be one of my favorites! We took time to do some spectacular snorkeling at Honolua Bay. The walk to the bay from the road was a short and beautiful tropical stroll through a lovely natural wooded valley. Once at the bay, there's a very rocky shoreline that you must carefully navigate to the water. Once you enter the blue waters with your snorkel equipment - the colorful corals and ocean fish are just beautiful! I swam with several sea turtles and saw angel fish, parrot fish and hundreds of species of coral life before me to explore.
We also took time to drive up to Haleakala National Park. Winding roads are in good condition as you drive up the summit to the top. At an altitude of over 10,000 feet you definitely need a jacket for this visit. On a clear day the lava fields and rocky summits are amazing to see. There are species of plants at the top that grow no where else in the world. This is a wonderful day trip to take to learn a bit more about the geological history of the islands and see first hand the unique beauty of this island.
Keep Maui on your list of best places to see in Hawaii for a very diverse and wonderful experience in this tropical paradise!
